English Culture Day at the High School

On September 24, 2019 our students participated in English Culture Day at the High School. Our day began with an interactive presentation highlighting English culture’s impact on the arts and entertainment of our day. Students learned that the UK has left an indelible impression on our perception of literature, music, cinema, television, and theater.

Can teenagers fall in love? This is one of the questions raised and answered in the timeless classic, “Romeo and Juliet.” Literature teacher, Joseph Chang, helped the students to understand the plot, characters, and themes in Shakespeare’s play. The discussion was an excellent preview as students would later view an adaptation of the play in downtown Warsaw in the evening. Students spent the remainder of the morning preparing for our main activity: “Lomianki’s Got Talent!” Loosely based on the model of the smash-hit UK TV series, “Britain’s Got Talent,” students performed short acts in honor of their favorite or notable personalities from English culture. Notable characters included: Margaret Thatcher, James Bond, Elton John, Jack the Ripper, Freddie Mercury, The Beatles and more. The performances were live streamed to other classrooms whereby fellow students were able to observe and vote for their favorite acts. We all had a ball performing and applauding! Lomianki has certainly got talent!

Next, students boarded a coach bound for Old Town. After singing a few English language songs while traveling along the Wisla we arrived at the Hotel Bristol. The Afternoon Tea is a part of British high society. We indulged in this posh tradition enjoying delectable sandwiches, scones, pastries, and, of course, tea in the beautifully appointed ballroom.

Students and teachers finally arrived at Studio Buffo for the live-action 3D performance of “Romeo and Juliet.” The house was packed for this astounding sensory experience that included singing, modern dance, break dance, rap all set in front of a 3D projection screen. The classic story was adapted for a futuristic world of “haves and have-nots” on an Earth suffering the effects of global climate change. Student reviews were (mostly) glowing for the performers and production. We boarded the bus back to Lomianki at 9:15 PM happily exhausted from a day chocked-full of English Culture.
